Attending (full course)

PracticeWise, LLC, is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. PracticeWise, LLC, maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

This course is designed to help you learn to recognize, understand, and apply the practice element Attending.

Course Structure:
This course consists of three online learning modules that include instructional videos and progress questions. The learning modules are followed by a posttest and course evaluation. The Attending practice guide is also included with the course. A continuing education certificate is available for download after successful completion of the course.

Learning Objectives:

1. State that Attending is special one-on-one time a caregiver sets aside for positively observing and reflecting on a youth's behaviors.
2. Summarize the key strategies of Attending: describing the youth's activity, praising the youth's effort, and reflecting the youth's verbalizations to show the caregiver’s acceptance and understanding of the youth.
3. Indicate how Attending can improve the quality of the caregiver-youth relationship.
4. Demonstrate the three do’s of effective Attending: regular time of youth-led play, positive descriptive comments, and active involvement.
5. Illustrate the three don’ts of effective Attending: criticism, commands, and questions during youth-led play time.
